Description:
Safety Professionals begin their careers being inundated with terms, concepts, and responsibilities related to organizational risk management and insurance, but often have little background or education on these topics. This interactive presentation will identify key definitions, descriptions, and examples for the safety professional to use to better understand and communicate with and improve their influence with executive leadership.
Learning Objectives:
- Define and understand the four primary risk management strategies
- Identify the key players in the business insurance process
- Understand how to read and understand insurance loss run reports
- “The MOD”
- Develop a working understanding of Total Cost of Risk (TCOR)
- Become familiar with different types of commercial insurance programs

Speaker Bio:
Mike joined Guy Hurley LLC in 2021 as their first safety and risk services leader. In this role he works with clients and carrier/captive partners to protect the lives and assets of their organizations and improve their overall risk profiles.
Mike’s previous experience includes leading three insurance carrier/agency risk control departments, company safety director, loss control consultant, and seven years as the Director of Safety Services for the Michigan Road Builders Association. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety Health Manager (CSHM), Certified Authority on Workers’ Compensation (CAWC), and a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Mike is an industry recognized contributor, speaker, and volunteer and is:
- Past President and current Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Safety Conference
- 2004 Michigan Safety Conference Safety Professional of the Year
- 2004 ASSE Greater Detroit Chapter Safety Professional of the Year
- 2005 American Society of Safety Engineers Region VII Safety Professional of the Year
- Part time paid-on-call firefighter/EMT for 30 plus years Mike holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Madonna University.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time at his Northern Michigan beach cottage and hacking his way around the golf course. He lives in Brighton, MI with his wife and Golden Mountain Doodle “Howie.”
